"Pampadum Shola" translates to "the forest where the snake dances." It is the smallest national park in Kerala, but don't let the size fool you. This 1.32 sq km patch of forest is one of the most biodiverse regions in the Western Ghats.
Located on the road to Vattavada, driving through this park is an experience in itself. The canopy is so thick that sunlight often struggles to reach the road, creating a moody, misty atmosphere that feels straight out of a fantasy movie.
The Elusive Nilgiri Marten
This park is famous for being the home of the Nilgiri Marten, the only species of marten found in southern India. It looks like a small, golden-brown weasel and is incredibly rare. Spotting one is a badge of honor for any wildlife photographer.
Other Wildlife
Even if you don't spot the marten, you will definitely see:
- Nilgiri Langurs: Black monkeys with golden manes, often seen jumping across the road.
- Indian Gaur (Bison): Huge, majestic beasts often seen grazing near the check-post.
- Giant Malabar Squirrel: Look up into the trees for a flash of purple and maroon.
Eco-Tourism Activities
The Forest Department organizes several activities here:
- Nature Trail: A guided walk through the forest.
- Log House Stay: You can book a stay in the government-run log houses inside the forest (advance booking required).
Important Rules
This is a protected area. Do not stop your vehicle inside the park unless it's at a designated viewpoint. Do not feed the monkeys—it makes them aggressive and dependent. And absolutely no plastic.
The Drive
The road from Top Station to Vattavada cuts right through the park. It is a narrow, winding road that offers some of the best driving experiences in South India. Roll down your windows, turn off the music, and listen to the jungle.
