Just 40km from Munnar lies a site that predates modern civilization. The Dolmens (Muniyaras) of Marayoor are megalithic burial chambers from the Iron Age, standing silently amidst the sandalwood forests.
What are Dolmens?
Dolmens are ancient burial structures made of four stones placed on edges and covered by a fifth stone called the capstone. They look like small stone tables or huts. Archaeologists believe they were used to bury the remains of tribal chieftains.
Why Visit?
It's a surreal experience. You are standing next to structures built thousands of years ago by people who lived on this land. The site is located on a rocky hill, offering a panoramic view of the Pambar River and the sugarcane fields below.
The Legend
Local legends say that the 'Muniyaras' were the dwelling places of ancient sages (Munis) who meditated here. Hence the name 'Muniyara' (Abode of the Sage).
