The Shola forests are unique to the Western Ghats. They are stunted tropical montane forests separated by rolling grasslands. Walking through them is like walking through a biological time capsule.

What Makes Them Special?

Shola trees are short, with twisted branches covered in moss and lichens. They act like sponges, absorbing rain and releasing it slowly into streams. They are the reason why rivers like the Pambar never dry up.

Plants to Spot

1. Rhododendron Nilgiricum

The only Rhododendron species found in South India. Its bright red flowers bloom from late winter to early summer, adding a splash of color to the green canopy.

2. Wild Orchids

Look closely at the tree trunks. You will find tiny, intricate orchids blooming in the moss. They are delicate and beautiful.

3. Strobilanthes (Kurinji)

While the Neelakurinji blooms once in 12 years, there are other species of Strobilanthes that bloom annually or every few years.

The Nature Walk

We organize guided nature walks through the periphery of the Pampadum Shola National Park. Our guides are locals who know the name of every plant and its medicinal use.

Conservation

Shola forests are extremely sensitive. Once destroyed, they cannot be replanted easily. That's why we practice strict 'Leave No Trace' principles on our walks.

It's not just a forest; it's a water tank, a carbon sink, and a home to thousands of species.
