Most tourists in Munnar stop at the roadside waterfalls—Attukad, Lakkam, or Cheeyappara. They are beautiful, but they are crowded. If you crave the sound of water crashing onto rocks without the noise of honking cars, you need to find Chilanthiyar Falls.
Hidden deep within the forests of Vattavada, this tiered waterfall is one of the region's best-kept secrets. It's not just a sightseeing spot; it's an adventure.
The Trek
The journey to the falls is as mesmerizing as the destination itself. The trek starts from a small path near the Vattavada village. It's a moderate trek, taking you through dense Shola forests and eucalyptus groves.
- Distance: Approx. 2-3 km (one way)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Duration: 2-3 hours (round trip)
What to Expect
As you walk deeper into the forest, the air gets cooler. You might spot Nilgiri Langurs jumping between trees or hear the call of exotic birds. The trail can be slippery, especially after rains, so watch your step.
Suddenly, the trees clear up, and you see it—a majestic stream of white water cascading down the rocks into a crystal-clear pool. The water is freezing cold and incredibly pure.
Safety First
The rocks around the waterfall are extremely slippery. Do not attempt to climb the upper tiers without a guide. The currents can be stronger than they look.
Best Time to Visit
The falls are at their glorious best just after the monsoon (September to December). The water flow is heavy, and the forest is lush green. Summer (March to May) is great if you want to take a dip in the lower pools, as the water flow is gentler.
Packing List
- Footwear: Trekking shoes or shoes with good grip are non-negotiable.
- Leech Socks: If visiting during monsoon, leeches are common.
- Water: Carry at least 1 liter per person.
- Camera: You'll want to capture this.
Getting There
